What's This?

It's an interactive quiz allowing you to test your knowledge and memory of the London Underground (tube) Map by filling in the names of the stations.

Why?

Because it's fun! Well at least I think so, and I was looking for something like this on the internet and couldn't find one anywhere, so I wrote my own.

That sounds like fun to me too -- take me there.

Easier for you to do that yourself, simply follow this link.

How to play?

I hope it'll be fairly intuitive. Click on the stations on the blank tube map and type in the name. If you get it right you'll see the station name pop up on the map and your score will increase. If you get it wrong the incorrect guesses score will increase.

You can scroll around the map using the big blue arrows to the right of the blank map. Alternatively click on the mini tube map below the navigation arrows to jump straight to a particular area.

Is there a FAQ?

Yes. You're looking at it.

How do I save my current scores?

As long as you have cookies enabled in your browser, this should happen automatically.

Can't I cheat by just looking at a tube map?

Yes.

I'm sure I've got the right station name, but it won't accept it.

The system is reasonably liberal about punctuation, and less so about spelling. For example both St. Paul's and St Pauls (and other similar variations) are acceptable. However Ueston, Yooston, Houston, and anything else that's just plain wrong will be rejected.

If you're absolutely convinced that you're typing in a correct form of a station then email me and I can have it added.

Is this licensed by TfL?

No it's not. At this point I'd like to try to placate their lawyers by pointing out that the tube map is copyright to Transport for London. I know that in the past they've asked for the removal of derivative works that they feel are devaluing the brand, I hope that this won't fall into that category and that they'll be good enough to let it stay here.

If TfL would like to get in touch, the email address is below.

I've found a bug!

Oops, that's quite possible. Please send as many details as you can to tubequiz@googlemail.com and I'll see if I can sort it out for you. Note that at the very least you must be using a fairly modern browser (IE 6 / Mozilla / Firefox) and have Javascript enabled, otherwise it's not going to work at all.

I've thought of a great new feature!

Excellent! Send it to me (email address as above) and I'll consider it for inclusion in the next version.

Can I have a copy on my own site?

Yes, but with certain restrictions:

Creative Commons License
The HTML and Javascript code associated with this site is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.5 License.

Essentially this means you can have and/or host your own copy, as long as you're not a company or organisation using it to make money or for any other kind of promotion, sales, or marketing usage. You must also mention that the original version of this game comes from this website (www.waitingforlunchtime.co.uk) and have a link back here.

The site is available in two files (to make it easier to handle updates).

tileset-1.01.tar.gz (500kb) - this contains all the image files that get tiled to make up the map. It's unlikely to change except when the tube map itself changes.

tubegame-1.02.tar.gz (18kb) - this contains all the HTML and javascript necessary to recreate the site. It'll change whenever there's a bugfix or new features added.

Simply download both files, un-tar them into the same directory on your web server and point your browser at "tubegame.html", and away you go!
